The Highlights of Nepal

Journey Overview

Sometimes the best adventures don't require long drives or expensive flights. Sometimes they're hiding right at the edge of the city, waiting for you to take the first step. The Shivapuri hike is exactly that, a three-day journey into Nepal's closest wilderness sanctuary, where rhododendron forests replace traffic noise and Himalayan peaks appear through the trees like promises. Your escape begins at Budhanilkantha, just 30 minutes from Kathmandu's chaos. Enter Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and immediately feel the temperature drop as you ascend stone steps through oak and rhododendron forests. Visit Nagi Gumba, a serene Buddhist monastery where monks chant amid mountain silence. Continue to Baghdwar, the sacred source of the Bagmati River, where water cascades from stone mouths surrounded by prayer flags. Summit Shivapuri Peak at 2,732 meters and watch the Kathmandu Valley spread beneath you while Langtang's peaks rise in the distance. This is the perfect introduction to Himalayan trekking, challenging enough to feel accomplished, gentle enough for beginners, and close enough to fit into any itinerary. Wake to birdsong instead of car horns. Walk trails where langurs swing through canopies and birdsong fills the air. Return to Kathmandu refreshed, exercised, and wondering why you didn't discover this sanctuary sooner. The Himalayas are closer than you think.
